Licensed Foster Homes and Children in Custody

If it has been assessed that a child’s safety and or well-being cannot be assured in the home, the Department for Children and Families – Family Services Division can request DCF custody of the child through the Juvenile Court. Licensed foster homes often provide homes and care for children in out-of-home protective custody.

The chart below shows the number of licensed foster homes and the number of children in out-of-home custody over time. It’s important to note that this data only reflects foster homes that have completed the licensure process, and does not capture homes that are in the licensure process.
